Arjun Paruchuri IntroducesLife-Saving Skills Training
In the rolling agricultural fields of Maryland, fresh produce is abundant — yet thousands of nearby families face daily food insecurity, often lacking access to nutrient-dense fruit. Recognizing that regional food pantries frequently receive shelf-stable canned goods rather than perishable berries, Arjun set out to bridge this nutritional gap for his Eagle Scout project.
He partnered with a local Maryland community farm, identifying a bottleneck in their operation: sprawling, unmanaged berry canes trailed across the soil — damaging fruit, encouraging disease, and making harvesting nearly impossible for volunteers.
To maximize the farm's capacity to nourish neighboring communities, Arjun designed and constructed a series of custom, heavy-duty berry cane organizers — vertical trellising structures engineered for trailing blackberries and raspberries. He led fundraising, timber cuts, and weekend build sessions with fellow Scouts.
Today, those organized rows yield hundreds of pounds of fresh, sun-ripened berries each season, distributed directly to local Maryland non-profits, food banks, and shelter kitchens — ensuring vulnerable families receive vibrant, healthy produce from their community's soil.
“A lasting structure of dignity and care —ensuring vulnerable families receive vibrant, healthy produce from their community’s soil.”
